Tracking our carbon footprint with STICA
Since 2018, Fristads has mapped its greenhouse gas emissions as a member of the Swedish Textile Initiative for Climate Action, STICA. In 2020, Fristads reduced emissions by 54% compared with the previous year and by 58% since the baseline year 2018. The decrease was primarily due to an increase in renewable energy and effects of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Our goal for scope 1 and 2 was a decrease by 50% from the baseline year 2018 to 2030 and we are delighted that we exceeded that goal already in 2020. But we need to keep in mind that 2020 was a very special year due to Covid-19 and that these numbers may be misleading. We will therefore continue our work to achieve a sustainable long-term reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions and overall environmental impact, as we begin to measure and report scope 3,” says Lisa Rosengren, Head of R&D Raw Material at Fristads.
Next step: Scope 3
The STICA figures showed that Fristads’ main climate impact in scopes 1 and 2 still comes from company owned cars, followed by electricity consumption in offices and warehouses. In 2020, 53% of the total energy use came from renewable sources and 47% from non-renewable sources. To improve our overall climate impact, we aim to continue to increase the share of renewable energy sources in our offices and use more electric cars in our company fleet.
Most of Fristads’ emissions occur within scope 3, which we aim to report at the end of 2021. Scope 3 involves emissions outside our own walls, throughout our value chain – from the materials that we purchase and the energy use of our suppliers, to transportation and the disposal of the goods once they have reached the end of their life.
